As back to school approaches and we find ourselves gearing up for the new season, it’s a time of fresh starts and new challenges. Whether you’re sending kids back to school, preparing for college drop-offs, or simply navigating the latest life hurdles, we can always find comfort and guidance in our faith in God. Alongside this spiritual anchor, there’s another, often overlooked tool that can help us face these transitions with confidence and grace—our wardrobe.

Bill Cunningham once said, “Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.” This quote has been a guiding light for me, especially during times of change. It’s a beautiful reminder that what we wear can be more than just clothing; it can be a powerful source of empowerment and comfort.
Recently, I experienced my own challenging transition while recovering from an illness. Throughout my recovery, I leaned heavily on my faith in God, which was the true help and source of strength that got me through. During those weeks of healing, I also found solace in a few key pieces of clothing that brought both comfort and a sense of normalcy. One standout was a blue lounge set I ordered from my hospital bed, knowing I would need a splash of color to brighten my spirits. It was cozy and cheerful—exactly what I needed during recovery. Another favorite was a pair of navy flare leg capris, perfect for those first days of feeling well enough to get dressed and start moving around. These pieces weren’t just about comfort; they were about reclaiming my identity and feeling like myself again.

For many parents, the end of summer signals the bittersweet moment of sending children back to school or off to college. It’s a period filled with mixed emotions—pride, worry, and a touch of sadness as our little ones (or not-so-little ones) take another step towards independence. As they step into new environments and experiences, they, too, need their own “armor.” This is where fashion comes in. A thoughtfully chosen outfit can help them feel confident and ready to face new challenges, whether it’s making new friends, tackling challenging subjects, or adjusting to a new routine.
For us, the parents, guardians, and caregivers, this transition can be just as challenging. The house might feel a bit emptier, and the daily routine might shift. In these moments, finding comfort in our faith in God is crucial, as He provides the true help and strength we need. Yet, there’s also something grounding about putting on a favorite outfit, a special piece of jewelry, or even a bold lipstick. Sometimes, it’s about finding that one piece—the perfect sweater, a statement coat, or a pair of shoes—that becomes your go-to item, giving you an extra boost of confidence and comfort to get through the day. These small acts can uplift our spirits, providing a sense of normalcy and control.
Fashion doesn’t just apply to special occasions; it’s part of our everyday life. As we navigate new schedules, face the unknown, or even tackle new professional challenges, the right outfit can be like a suit of armor. It can give us the courage to step into the world with our heads held high, ready to conquer whatever comes our way.
As we move into this new season, let’s embrace the power of fashion as a form of self-expression and a confidence booster. Whether it’s a cozy sweater that feels like a warm hug, a pair of shoes that make us feel unstoppable, or a favorite color that brightens our day, these choices are all part of our personal armor. Finding that one perfect piece can make the difference between a daunting day and one that feels manageable and even enjoyable.
So, as you pack those bags for college, prepare the back-to-school outfits, or even revamp your own wardrobe for the fall, remember: Fashion is not just about looking good; it’s about feeling good. It’s about arming ourselves with the confidence and strength to face whatever life throws our way. And as we do, let’s also find comfort in knowing that we are never alone, guided and supported by our faith in God and the love of those around us.
Here’s to a stylish and empowered new season!
